You’ve signed the Communities United Against Domestic Violence Pledge. Now what?
We understand every business, organization, and individual has unique talents and participates in different ways. Here are practical ways to become involved:
-

Promote & Share
Promote Safe Journey & PurpleOne with your business or organization—share domestic violence awareness and resources with your network.
-

Resource Info
Display Safe Journey flyers or resource information.
-

DV Task Force
Join the Rural Erie County Domestic Violence Task Force.
-

Training
Attend a PurpleOne (purpleone.org) or Orange Circles (mysafejourney.org) training.
-

Become a PurpleOne Safe Place
Must have a physical storefront or office, commit to having at least one staff member complete a PurpleOne training and prominently display the PurpleOne Dot in your window or front door. This tells victims your business is a safe space to ask for information or a referral.
-

Organize a Donation Drive
Safe Journey often needs "starter kits" for survivors moving into new homes. Collect new linens and towels, kitchen essentials (pots, pans, utensils), and unused toiletries and personal-care items.
-

Social Media
Share or engage with Safe Journey, PurpleOne, or Orange Circles on social media—follow us, like posts, tag friends or colleagues, comment (even an emoji helps).
-

Corporate Gift Matching
If you are a business owner, pledge to match employee donations to Safe Journey or PurpleOne during Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.
-

Sponsor a Safe Night
Host a fundraiser—set a goal to cover the cost of a specific number of nights in emergency shelter for a survivor and their children.
-

DV Workplace Policy
Go beyond the pledge by creating a formal policy that protects the jobs of survivors, offers flexible scheduling for court dates, and ensures their safety while at work.
-

Offer Pro-Bono Services
If you have a specific skill (legal, accounting, marketing, or trades like plumbing/locksmithing), pledge a certain number of hours to assist the organization or survivors directly.
-

Erie Gives Day
Commit to making Safe Journey your featured nonprofit during the Erie Community Foundation’s annual day of giving on the second Tuesday in August.
-

Speak Up
Speak up when you hear jokes that belittle women, glorify violence, and discriminate against minorities.
-

Purple Ribbon Challenge
Challenge three other businesses or friends to sign the pledge and post about it on social media to create a "chain reaction" of commitment across Erie County and beyond.
-

Wear Purple
The color that denotes domestic violence awareness. Display a purple ribbon on your vehicle’s antenna, wear a purple ribbon or wristband, or even dye your hair purple to show you are taking a stand for victims.
-

Refer a Survivor to Safe Journey
If a victim confides in you, listen without judgment. Believe what they say and, if that’s what they want, offer to help them contact Safe Journey.
